When using Microsoft365 cloud services, it’s important to understand that the company is not responsible for backing up your data.
While Microsoft365 ensures the availability and security of their cloud infrastructure, the responsibility for data protection lies with the user.
This means that if you experience data loss due to accidental deletion, ransomware, or any other reason, Microsoft does not automatically provide a backup of your data.
A true backup should include the ability to restore a system back to its original state in the event of a total outage.
Out of the box, Microsoft365 provides some capacity to backup files on created on remote machines however this does not provide a full backup of your Microsoft Apps such as MS Teams, SharePoint Websites, OneDrive and Exchange mailboxes.
By far the best strategy is 3-2-1. 3 backups, 2 different media types and 1 copy offsite or an On machine backup, Off Machine backup and an Off Site backup.
Using third-party backup solution that integrates with Microsoft’s cloud services is one way to achieve the 3 2 1 strategy without introducing a human element that can may introduce failure points.
